Ghanaian soccer player Christian Atsu dies in Turkey earthquake

The earthquake in Turkey took the life of Ghanaian forward Christian Atsu, who also played for Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle.

The 12-story building where Atsu lived in Antakya city, Hatay province, was in rubble when his body was discovered, according to Atsu's manager, who made the announcement on Saturday.

"In the debris, Atsu's lifeless body was discovered. Their possessions are still being taken at this time, the manager Murat Uzunmehmet told the Turkish news agency DHA.

As of September, Atsu was playing for Kasmpa S.K. after joining Turkish club Hatayspor. scored the game-winning goal at home against a league opponent.

The city of Antakya, where Hatayspor is headquartered, is in the area of southern Turkey most severely affected by the earthquake.

Atsu's body was reportedly being returned to Ghana, according to Hatayspor. The club said, "There are no words to adequately express our sorrow.

On his official Twitter account, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo shared a photo of Atsu along with the following message: "One of Ghana football's best players and ambassadors has left the team and will be hard to replace. We will miss him."

Atsu made more than 60 appearances for Ghana and scored in his professional debut in 2012 at the age of 20

He represented Ghana at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and shone at the 2015 African Cup of Nations, scoring two goals to lead Ghana to the championship game, which it lost to Ivory Coast in a penalty shootout.
